Is the health of a student connected to socioeconomic status?
Is the #health of a student connected to socioeconomic status? #SES
πΎπππ π π πππ πππππ?
Here is what I have been reading and trying to make the connection as to why #esports clubs in middle school and high schools are very impactful.
1. Research conducted has found that parental SES is associated with physical inactivity in their children (MΓ€nnikkΓΆ et al., 2020).
2. It appears that low SES is a direct risk factor for physical inactivity, and externalizing problems correlate with total daily screen time.
3. Further research reports that young adults from single-parent households or blended families are at a greater risk for PROBLEM GAMING than those from two-parent families (Lam et al., 2009; Yen, Ko, et al., 2007; Yen, Yen, et al., 2007).
4. Many students are finding screen time in isolation through social media, streaming services, #gaming, and devices. This could be because of access, neglect, escapism, and even parents using screen time as a #DigitalBabysitter.
5. A nationwide coalition of city leaders and advocacy groups are urging the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to investigate the practice of "#DigitalRedlining," which they said has resulted in a gaping #DigitalDivide that impacts communities of color the most.
6. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) reports that the percentage of public school seniors by participation and nonparticipation in extracurricular activities shows a 20% increase or more of attaining a GPA over 3.0, fewer unexcused absences, and expectancy to earn a bachelor's degree or higher.
7. It is argued that playing video games is among the most effective means by which adolescents generate positive feelings. A study shows playing video games is NOT associated with #depression in teens compared to screen time with TV, social media, and regular computer use (Boers, et al., 2019; Afzali et al., 2019; Newton et al., 2019; Conrod et al., 2019).
8. The Gaming Concepts #curriculum for high schools in combination with esports clubs has shown to on average increase a studentβs GPA by 1.7 and attendance by 10% (Dr. Kristy Custer & Dr. Michael Russell).
This is why the Varsity Esports Foundation was created. Disenfranced students in low socioeconomic areas with limited access to #opportunities deserve to participate in #college and #career readiness through esports clubs and curriculum in schools. It also provides the ability to learn in a safe environment with an educator about #PhysicalHealth, #teamwork, #problemsolving, #criticalthinking, #cyberbullying, and #mentalhealth.
